Things were looking up for Wilshere when he was recalled to the England squad for the first time since their bitter loss against Iceland at Euro 2016. Now, the midfielder's hopes have come tumbling down.
England face the Netherlands in a friendly on Friday as they get geared up for the World Cup in Russia. Wilshere, however, will not be present.
According to 'Sportsmail,' the 26-year-old picked up an injury in a training session that has caused him to stay at home. The severity of the injury remains unknown.
No doubt Wilshere will be gutted to discover he's not fit to play. The Arsenal player knew more than anyone that the upcoming friendlies would be his last chance to impress as he looks to cement his place in England's starting XI.
Leading up to Friday's game, Wilshere had previously said: "Hopefully I'll get the chance this week or next week to put the England shirt back on again and it will be special."
The Englishman will now be crossing his fingers he returns for the clash with Italy on 27th March so he can prove his ability to Gareth Southgate.
