To be the best, you have to beat the best. Zinedine Zidane's charges have certainly taken that message on board so far this season, showing the same tenacity and will to win away from home as on their own turf.
The key to the success of the only team to have won two consecutive Champions League titles is their showings away from home. The last of which, a 3-0 win over Juventus in Turin, didn't really surprise anyone, with the Spanish giants also seeing off big-spending PSG 2-1 at the Parc des Princes earlier in the competition.
Instead of turning the Bernabeu into a fortress, Zidane has done the opposite, instilling a siege mentality into his side and giving them the belief that they can go anywhere and come away with three points.
Real have only claimed one point fewer away from home in La Liga than at the Bernabeu, despite having played one game less on the road.
Put simply, Real Madrid don't care where they play, having left a number of "fortresses" with three points over the course of the last few years, including: the Camp Nou (Spanish Super Cup 17-18) and the Vicente Calderon (La Liga 16-17) domestically as well as claiming their 11th European Cup at the San Siro, their 12th at the Millenium Stadium in Cardiff and claiming Champions League victories away to Napoli (1-3 16-17), Bayern Munich (1-2 16-17), Borussia Dortmund (1-3 17/18), PSG (1-2 17/18) and Juventus (0-3 17/18).
- Atletico test -
After all but booking their place in the Champions League semi-finals, attention turns to a Madrid derby against Atletico this Sunday and history is on Real's side.
Zidane had led Real in seven games against Diego Simeone's men, claiming three wins, two draws and two defeats. One of those wins came on home turf (a 3-0 win in the fist leg of the 2016/17 Champions League semi-final), another away (0-3 in La Liga in 2016/17) and another at a neutral ground (the 2015/16 Champions League final).
The draws both came in La Liga (1-1 at the Bernabeu in 2016/17 and 0-0 at the Wanda this season), with the defeats coming both home (0-1 in La Liga in 2015/16) and away (2-1 in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final in 2016/17 at the Calderon).
