Benzema's arrival saw Pellegrini move away from his reliance on the Real legend. Raul left the club the same summer as Benzema arrived, knowing that the Frenchman would be first choice.

After several seasons without any real competition for Benzema, Hernandez arrived at the Bernabeu. The Mexican scored some important goals, including one in the Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid in 2015 but despite his popularity with the fans, he was later moved on.

The Spaniard could have done little more to make himself a regular started but Zidane was very clear that Benzema is his No 9. Despite his impressive performances and goalscoring, Morata departed Madrid and headed for the Premier League as Benzema's latest victim.
