Gareth Southgate knows all about England's woes from the spot, having missed the crucial kick in the Euro 96 semi-final shootout, and contributing to England's win ratio of only 14 per cent.
In a bid to put the Three Lions' infamous penalty troubles behind them, Southgate wants penalties to be taken in front of a packed Wembley crowd before the World Cup. This is something predecessor Sven-Goran Eriksson considered but never went through with the idea, and England were knocked out of the 2006 World Cup by Portugal in a shootout.
"It's something that we are considering and how we prepare best for penalty shootouts," said Southgate. "Whether that's something on the training ground, whether that's in sessions we do away from the training ground or something we do in some sort of match scenario, we've not finalised things like that yet, but clearly that is an option."
