Reports claim that a group of Marseille fans made their way pitchside to confront Evra over his recent form, leading to the violent altercation.
Eye-witnesses claim that Evra had been the target of offensive chants for half an hour before the incident and that when he went to confront the fans, the situation escalated quickly.
Videos show Evra aiming a kung-fu kick at a fan, something which ended with him being shown a red card by referee Tamas Bognar, before the game had even started!
Thankfully for Marseille, Evra was only due to be on the bench.
The incident marked the first time in the history of the Europa League that a player has been sent off before a ball has been kicked.
It's fair to say that the former Manchester United man can expect a significant ban.
