Spanish publication 'Mundo Deportivo' claims that Ajax youngster Matthijs De Ligt is at the top of the Catalan side's wishlist as they scour the world for a talented young defender to act as a long-term successor to Gerard Pique.
At just 18, De Ligt certainly fits the bill, having hugely impressed for that Amsterdam-based side last season and shown his ability to handle big games by playing in the Europa League final against Manchester United.
The youngster is highly rated at the Amsterdam Arena and has already made his debut for the Dutch national side despite his tender years.
Barca believe that, having been schooled at Ajax, the player would fit perfectly into their philosophy and are set to make a serious move for the youngster next summer.
Ernesto Valverde is thought to have made revamping an ageing defence his prioty upon arriving at the Camp Nou in the summer and with Thomas Vermaelen and Javier Mascherano both expected to leave the club at the end of the season De Ligt and Colmbian centre-back Yerry Mina, who is on the verge of a move to the club, would act as like-for-like replacements.
De Ligt has started every league game for Ajax so far this season and is under contract in the Dutch capital until 2021.
