The Catalan giants had previously identified the 18-year-old defender as a future target, but according to Spanish publication 'Mundo Deportivo', Barcelona have stepped up their pursuit of him and now want to secure his services in January.
De Lift is very highly rated in Amsterdam and is considered one of the most promising players in Europe after breaking into Ajax's first team last year.
Barca have kept a close eye on the teenager after his impressive form for the Dutch giants, and the powers that be at the Camp Nou believe he can easily fit the club's style of play.
His current deal at Ajax runs until 2021 so it is likely Barcelona will have to offer a hefty fee for De Ligt's services, but they are reportedly confident of landing their man.
De Ligt came through Ajax's famed youth academy and he scored on his senior debut in a cup match in September next year, making him he club's second youngest goalscorer ever, behind only the legendary Clarence Seedorf.
Despite having only played two league matches for Ajax, the centre-back was handed his senior international debut for the Netherlands back in March.
